Constantly Upgrading … Maybe

My experience is Sunday is the hardest day to write. It has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with an utter lack of stimulus. So today I’m out and about. While I love my Chromebook, its battery life leaves something to be desired. But hey, no pressure!

Fortunately today, I was able to catch up with an old friend.

As a six-year-old, with his family Alex moved to the 2T from Texas in 1980. I met him shortly thereafter. After high school we went our separate ways. I went to Idaho State in Pocatello. He went to the University of Idaho up in Moscow (no, not that Moscow). Today our alma maters share a state, a tradition of bad football teams, and not much else.

I was supposed to meet him yesterday during one of his rare visits to the 2T, but I wasn’t feeling up to the drive. Fortunately he was gracious enough to meet me here in Boise while en route back to his place in the Seattle area.

Alex works for a software company up there you may have heard of. Let the record show he assures us improvements will be made on a certain much-maligned operating system in the near future.

So settle down, y’all. They’re actually pretty good at fixing mistakes.

There’s a certain surrealism about meeting up with a friend one has known for so long. In every sense, we’re a long way removed from the idiots who post-school dance at Me-n-Ed’s circa 1986 were more entertained by a bendable plastic rabbit toy than, you know … girls. Instead of discussing such things as Garfield comics and Weird Al Yankovic lyrics, we had fruitful conversation about relationships, health (especially when it comes to depression) and good craft beer. Like me, Alex has a soft spot for a good brew.

I don’t believe in regret, but I do wholeheartedly believe in self-improvement. Alex has done well in this regard. Unlike me, he’s not Deep Blue running on Windows ME. He’s also getting married again next year. Having met Anny – his fiancé – today as well, I daresay he’ll be much better off this second time around.

As for me, I’m out of the dating pool indefinitely by choice. Hell, it occurs that perhaps there was something to Alex’s toy rabbit after all. Note how it holds its carrot like a knife, Psycho-style.
